Mister Wurzel
Arc Light The Way

"Arc Light The Way" is a disc by a duo comprised of Lars And Lilian Wurzel with Zoltan Hirsi Ali of bands like FOB or Im Fokus. The duo have been active for over a decade and share a friendly, laid-back vibe, even when they’re bombastic.

There’s a bit of a dork factor to the whole thing. Hirsi Ali’s take on Munchau's “Landscapes Of The Heart” is fun, and the cardboard wind instruments on “Lea Corridor” are like The Whole Enchilada. Ali transforms simple ideas into spiky, jazzy strips of sound. If you like your Mexican food spicy, this is for you.

One of the highlights is “L’Auto-Malaria”, which begins with a scratchy, disembodied soprano riff that’s almost Motörhead-like and ends with a rhythmic slop. Ali switches it up a bit with a slightly more natural sounding synth chord sequence. It sounds like a small helicopter is gliding through the air. Mister Wurzel switches it up again on “L’Auto-Malaria” with a more abstract, drone-like groove. The guitar playing is a bit more cluttered, but still kept within the sound’s rhythmic structure.

The full-length album is a perfect example of a project that combines emotional resonance with electronic exploration. It’s not always easy to figure out what these sounds mean, but hearing how Mister Wurzel conjures their atmospheres makes the most out of this music.
