Bibi Bibi
Big Black

An acousmatic approach to Afrobeat and Afrobeat-inspired dubs. The tracks are often strikingly similar, but there are recurring themes of melody, rhythmic repetition and subtle vocalising. The instrumentation changes, but the themes are always interesting to play with. It feels like the producers are taking a creative cue from the great dub master Siavash Phangat who ran a series named after his creations.

The English dubs are often extensive and often very danceable, especially on the tracks that are phrased and mixed in the style of Prince Buster and The Outfit. “Dawn Of The Dead” is a very detailed and subtle dubbing of a very tight rhythm. The vocal is a perfect example of that. It’s perhaps a bit too intimate for hip-hop, but the close vocal fits and tight rhythms make it work. “Big Black” is very stable and hardly changes. It has an Afrobeat feel, but also has a touch of the Delta Blues. The key comes on the second side, when the production goes back to the vocal moving through a low-key approach. Both of those tracks are good, but I prefer the vocal approach of Bibi Bibi. The rest of the album is on a similar footing, but the vocals are more prominent and the percussive volume is higher.
