Special Rapport
Un L’Enfant Sauvageur

It’s hard to keep up with all the releases from the French label (where the Parisian producer/DJ duo of Mathias Goudran and Lucian Ban, aka Special Rapport, have released four albums in 2016 alone), but here is a selection of gems. Two of these are on the elusive last track “Ouverture” by the Parisian DJ and producer, who is also active as the same label, Un L’Enfant Sauvageur.

It’s a short piece on the theme of African folklore, with a few references to African-African music, the Nigeria singer Ibiza, and the Jeddah mystic Kaifa. “50 Years” features a Qatari whooping and the group do give a nod to their relationship with the Abydos region; the cut is by the great Mina Khandaker, who also does some fine work in the Buraka style. “Ouverture” is a different ball and ride by Goudran and Ban, who breathe a sigh of relief when they’re interrupted by a heavy breathing, or perhaps a voice from the remote. One of the most affecting pieces is “Maine Toward the Sun” by the British DJ and producer, who inflects the music with the mood of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “I Want You” and the love song “To Love Somebody’s Gotta Be A Saint”.
