Ounce For A Pound: Rapaniang

A new cassette by a new label called Ounce For A Pound is a little over two minutes in length. It consists of a beatbox drum machine, bass drum, … hand drum … it's all done in a frantic manner with each of the tracks having its own particular audio and visual cues. The rapaniang (眉心) is a Chinese name for a narrative poem that recounts the life of a monk and his encounter with a demon. The demons are the old fashioned kind that haunt the hills and valleys of China. The nun is the only person who can exorcise them. The story is told in slow motion, with occasional breaks for electric guitar and matching drums. There are strings and effects in place of the drums, and the effect is to make the drum machine sound more sinister as it whirs. It eventually gets crazy enough to make the drums make a strange noise, but the vocals retain a fascinating psychological allusion.
